Oprah's 'Where Are They Now?': 'Laguna Beach' Star Kristin Cavallari Felt Used by MTV, Says Minors Shouldn't Be on Reality TV [Watch]
The upcoming episode of Oprah Winfrey's "Where are They Now?" series features former "Laguna Beach" star Kristin Cavallari, who revealed that she "felt very used and manipulated" by MTV while filming the hit reality show as a teen, Us Weekly reports.
Cavallari, who is now 27, alleges that MTV "pitted" her against her "Laguna Beach" co-star, Lauren Conrad, and staged a love triangle between the two girls and Cavallari's then-boyfriend, Stephen Colletti.
"Basically my boyfriend at the time, the producers would have him go and take out Lauren Conrad, take her to dinner, bring her flowers, which never would've happened if it wasn't for the show, for MTV," she said.
Cavallari also says that after watching "Laguna Beach's" first episode, which portrayed her as a villain, she went through a "difficult time" trying to come to terms with how she was depicted on television.
"I put up a really tough exterior because I felt like they were really trying to take advantage of me. It was a really difficult time, and then when I saw it air, and saw the way that they represented me, I was really, really upset. I cried for hours and hours after I saw the first episode. It was hard, it was really hard," she said.
The mother of two attributes the difficult time she experienced on the show with her age. Cavallari explained that "being 16, 17 in high school" at the time was not old enough for her to possess the ability to handle her "emotions" or even realize "what's going on."
Prior to the premiere episode of "Laguna Beach," Cavallari said she was unable to predict the massive popularity the show would garner over the years.
"We filmed a pilot, we had no idea what we were doing," Cavallari said. "We were just going along with whatever MTV was telling us to do. We were kids! We didn't know."
Now that many years have passed since the airing of "Laguna Beach," she advises that teens who do choose to be on reality TV should be at least 18-years-old.
ABC News reports that MTV has yet to respond to Cavallari's comments.
Cavallari's "Where are They Now?" episode airs on Dec. 7 at 9/8c on the OWN network.
