Apple TV has been around since 2007, but many consumers don't even know about it.

According to InvestorPlace, this is because Apple hardly really advertised or marketed the Apple TV and instead focuses more on their laptops and iPhones.

This year, Tim Cook told investors and the general public the Apple TV was doing pretty well, so the company decided to market the device a little more.

The only problem for Apple was the hardware hasn't been upgraded in two years.

Plus, competitors Amazon and Google (Chromecast) have released set top devices of their own. These devices are reportedly much better quality in terms of picture than Apple TV. Google's Chromecast has surpassed Apple TV already in sales. Amazon's Fire TV just came out in April, and it could soon surpass Apple as well.

Apple is still selling its Apple TV for $99, and it doesn't have anywhere near the number of features that cheaper devices have. Apple TV is pretty limited when it comes down to the apps and shows it can receive. You do get ESPN and CNBC, but with the other set top boxes, you get a much more complete experience.

There's no question that streaming television is taking off. In a report by Parks Associates, 10 percent of households who have high-speed Internet were found to be using some sort of streaming television. With "Smart TVs" that have built in apps and these set top boxes, it's becoming easier for consumers to access streaming services.

Some alternatives for consumers come in many different shapes and sizes. Typically they are a simple stick you insert into the side of your TV.

The Roku servicem on the other hand, is a small set top box and remote that offers tons of programming without having cable or satellite. It is regarded highly on tech websites and by consumers who reviewed it online. The devices offer tons of programming as well as many popular apps that allow users to enjoy all of their favorite media.
