Two Males, Two Females Shot Near Portland High School
Three people were taken to a hospital after being shot on Friday afternoon near a high school in Portland, Oregon.
Portland police Sgt. Pete Simpson said the shooting took place outside of the Rosemary Anderson High School campus in North Portland after noon. He said the victims were two males and one female, whose ages ranged from 16 to 20. He added that at least three of the victims ran inside of a school building after being shot outside on Killingsworth Court, reported CNN affiliate KOIN.
A fourth victim, a 17-year-old female, was treated for a graze at the scene.
The shooter was never inside Rosemary Anderson High School, said PPB Sgt. Pete Simpson during a press conference. By 1:15 p.m., students were released from the school, which is located at 717 North Killingsworth Court. Parents of students at Rosemary Anderson High School were directed to go to Killingsworth Court and Kerby Avenue to pick up their children.
Police said the shooter fled from the scene, reports CNN. Before any arrests were made, police believed gang activity may have been a factor. Afterwards, the PPB Gang Task Force, the Portland bureau of the FBI and the ATF arrived at the school around 1:30 p.m.
The victims were reported to be breathing and conscious when they were transported to a hospital, according to the police, although Fire Bureau spokesman Terry Foster said he didn't have further information about their conditions.
Other schools in the area, Jefferson High School and Portland Community College, were put on lockdown.
The Rosemary Anderson High School website states that the institution is an alternative school that serves at-risk students who were expelled or dropped out, are homeless or single parents. About 200 students are enrolled on an annual basis at the north Portland location. The school also has a second location in Gresham.
The website also describes the school as "Portland OIC's community-based alternative high school, in operation since 1983, and accredited by the NW Accreditation Commission."
