Sony Email Leak: Beyonce's Father Talked With Sony About Destiny's Child Biopic
Beyoncé's father, Matthew Knowles, is the latest topic of discussion following the leak of many high-profile emails leaked from Sony Pictures Entertainment during a recent cyber attack. According to the messages, Mr. Knowles approached the movie studio about making a film about the early life of his daughter and her female group Destiny's Child.
Knowles managed his daughter's career until she parted professional ways with him in 2011, and is also believed to have gone to Universal Studios with the idea, also alluded to in the emails dated from 2013.
"Matthew Knowles, Beyoncé's Father wants to make the film of Destiny's Child and came to me first," Screen Gems president Clint Culpepper wrote to Sony's Amy Pascal and a few other Sony executives in an email dated Dec. 4 of last year. "He's going to Universal next. Do we think it would be a successful film? They're on Sony label. I'm just not sure that it's not too soon."
Lifetime Network is scheduled to air a Destiny's Child television biopic in February. However, at the time Sony executives responded with enthusiasm to the idea, according to the Daily Beast.
Matthew and Beyonce's split after he managed her for many years through teen stardom as the lead singer of Destiny's child, with reports alleging that he had stolen money from her. She has since been managing her own career. He has been in the press in recent years for fathering several illegitimate children.
The group was together from 1998 to 2005, and enjoyed a lot of commercial success including singles like "Independent Women," "Say My Name" and "Bootylicious" although there were several changes in the group's lineup. The latter track was so popular, it was even added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2004.
The singers Knowles, Kelly Roland and Michelle Williams split in 2005 when Beyonce decided to pursue a solo career.
