Barack Obama Speaks to the Troops, Says 'We Will Get' Terrorists in Syria, Iraq; Afghanistan Is Still 'Very Dangerous'
On Monday, speaking inside a New Jersey airplane hangar to 3,000 troops, President Barack Obama gave his assessment of the Islamic terrorists in Syria and Iraq, stating boldly that the U.S. is "hammering these terrorists."
CNN reports the president addressed the crowd with motivating words, talking up the country’s tenacity. Obama said that U.S. had blunted their momentum and put them on the defensive.
"We do not give up," he said. "You threaten America, you will have no safe haven. We will find you, and like petty tyrants and terrorists before you, the world is going to leave you behind and keep moving on without you, because we will get you."
Obama went to the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst near Trenton in order to offer his gratitude to the U.S. military personnel, remarking that the U.S. combat mission in Afghanistan will conclude at year's end.
"This month, America's war in Afghanistan will come to a responsible end," said the president, cautioning that this "doesn't mean that everything's great in Afghanistan."
"Afghanistan is still a very dangerous place," Obama continued.
According to NJ.com, Obama spoke to the troops.
"After more than a decade of war, our nation is marking an important milestone," he said.
Obama was greeted by Republican Gov. Chris Christie. This was Obama's first visit to New Jersey since he toured the state's recovery from Hurricane Sandy on the Jersey Shore with Gov. Christie in May 2013.
The pair affectionately shook hands and spoke on the military tarmac where Air Force One landed before walking together to the airplane hanger where Obama delivered his address to the troops.
Christie, who is considering running for the 2016 GOP presidential nomination, had previously received a great deal of criticism from him own party for hugging Obama during a tour of Hurricane Sandy aftermath in 2012.
