Alexa Vega 'Machete Kills' Star Trying to Move Past 'Spy Kids' to Play More Adult Roles
Alexa Vega, who portrayed Carmen Cortez in the family action adventure Spy Kids franchise, is a kid no more -evident by her attire in the newly released film, Machete Kills.
Vega, 25, who announced her recent engagement to Spanish/Venezuelan actor and singer Carlos Pena Jr., plays the role of KillJoy in Machete Kills, who so far appears to be a gun-toting, studded bra-wearing, jeweled chaps-sporting prostitute with a score to settle.
The film is a direct sequel to Machete, which is a film based on fake trailers featured on Grindhouse. Machete (Danny Trejo), former federale, is recruited by the United States president to stop a menace from launching a missile aimed at D.C. In the process, Machete discovers that an eccentric arms dealer is inciting riots in every country, which is part of an ongoing conspiracy. The film's ensemble cast includes, Mel Gibson, Demián Bichir, Amber Heard, Michelle Rodriguez, Vergara, Charlie Sheen, Cuba Gooding Jr., Lady Gaga, Vanessa Hudgens, Antonio Banderas, Tom Savini, Jessica Alba, and, of course, Alexa Vega.
Machete Kills will make the fourth collaboration between Alexa Vega, Danny Trejo, Robert Rodriquez and Antonio Banderas, though it's the first that isn't a part of the Spy Kids series, the last of which was filmed just two years ago.
"I'm usually a dorky person so to take on a character that's this strong and sexy and confident in herself, I had to really go for it," Vega said.
"I wasn't only convincing (Rodriguez) - I had to convince the entire crew because I grew up with all these guys since I was 11," says Vega of the production team she's known since her "Spy Kids" days. It's like having 60 parents on set."
Vega admitted that it's difficult to move take on adult roles because audiences and, even, Hollywood players don't want to see her grow up. She also said that she plans to keep playing young roles while she can, but she hopes that Machete Kills grants her more opportunities in Hollywood, so that she can keep audiences guessing.
She was recently featured in campy horror flicks, Abandoned Mine and The Devil's Carnival, and an animated film called The Clockwork Girl. And, Vega has a number of films due out in 2013, 23 Blast, Bounty Killer, 1BR/1 BA, The Remaining, Wicked Blood, and The Hunters.
