'Fifty Shades of Grey' Movie Cast, Release Date & News: Jamie Dornan Says 50 Shades is Not Misogynistic
Jamie Dornan, who will star in “Fifty Shades of Grey” as male lead Christian Grey,” defends the film in the upcoming issue of Elle UK.
The British actor talked to the magazine about various aspects of the movie, particularly the sex scenes and the perceived misogynism.
Dornan speaking with Elle UK said the movie is more than just kinky sex.
“The love story is more important than the BDSM aspect. I mean, we are going to tell a love story, you know, it can’t just be what happens in the Red Room, that’s not a film. There’s so much more going on than that,” he said.
He also said the movie is not anti-feminist or anything along those lines, arguing that men tend to be more submissive.
“I can understand why people say tying a woman up and spanking her is misogynistic. But actually, more men are submissives than women. Very powerful men,” he told the magazine. “It’s a far bigger scene than I imagined: in pretty much any city in the world that you could name, people want to get spanked with a paddle with studs on it.”
However, since it was announced, Christian conservatives have especially criticized the movie, reports the Telegraph. After the trailer’s release, the organization Morality in Media said the film helped promote a “rape and sexual violence culture that is now permeating our society”.
Nonetheless, the movie remains very popular. Fans have been anxiously waiting for it. Rita Ora, who stars in the film as Grey’s sister Mia, teased fans with a new photo via Instagram.
While she expresses excitement for the film’s release and the New Year, her fans and fans of the books are more than likely more excited because of the subtle tease.
“Fifty Shades of Grey” will hit theaters on Feb. 13.
