Two West Virginia Cops Shot During Traffic Stop, Discover Suspect Stashed Dead Couple in Pickup Truck
Two West Virginia police officers were shot as they were questioning the driver of a stolen vehicle during a traffic stop on New Year's Day.
The two officers noticed that a white Chevrolet SUV with stolen North Carolina licenses plates and pulled the driver over for a traffic stop. That's when another driver in a red pickup truck pulled up to the scene and opened fire on the cops. The cops fired back, shooting the gunman in the leg, while the SUV drove off, reports the New York Daily News.
Eventually, the driver of the SUV turned himself in and cops found the shooter in a patch of woods. It was also discovered that the suspects had killed an elderly couple, burned down their home and dumped their bodies under a mattress inside of the pickup truck that he was driving.
West Virginia State Police identified the suspects as Edward Campbell, 54, and his son Eric Campbell, 21, of Indian Acres, Texas.
According to Sheriff Brindell Wilkins of North Carolina's Granville County, the Campbells allegedly broke into the home of Jerome Faulkner, 73, and his wife, Dora, 62, near Oak Hill, North Carolina around 7 a.m. on Thursday. After they killed the couple, they loaded their bodies into their own red pickup before driving both vehicles to West Virginia on Interstate 64.
The father-son crime wave "is something you see in the movies. It's unreal," Wilkins told Raleigh's WRAL television.
"When we first got the call, we thought it was just a structure fire," Wilkins added. "As things progressed, we found some things here that didn't look right."
The younger suspect was placed behind bars while his father is expected to recover from his gunshot wound in the leg.
A hospital spokesman also confirmed that the two cops are in "good but stable condition."
According to Reuters, the suspects will face charges in West Virginia of two counts of attempted murder of a police officer and two counts of malicious assault on a police officer.
