'Gotham' TV Show, Cast, Spoilers & Answers Speculations: Robin Lord Taylor Answers the Question, 'Could Oswald Cobblepot Really be the Joker in Disguise?' [Watch]
Last October, a reddit user theorized that 'Gotham's new fan-favorite Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor) wasn't the 'Batman' villain The Penguin, who is traditionally identified by a top hat, a cane or umbrella, a pointed nose and a love of birds. Instead, members of the fandom believe that he may secretly be the gamesome and merciless villain The Joker, who's iconic white face, green hair, face-splitting smile and sadistic sense of humor make him unforgettable.
The theory seems unlikely, simply based on Cobblepot's black-and-white presentation on "Gotham." But, many outlets have begun to pay attention to the notion. So, MTV News decided to get to the bottom of the situation, and asked Taylor about the theory during a recent interview with the actor, begging the question, "Could Oswald Cobblepot really be the psychotic clown, the Joker, in disguise?"
"I find it incredibly unlikely, but at the same time, I have no idea what could happen," Taylor said during his interview. "I get the scripts and I'll read something, and I will be just as shocked as everyone else is when they see it happen onscreen."
Taylor admitted that the theory was impressive and series runners are prone to twists, however this particular curveball won't likely be thrown on the hit FOX series.
"I read it, and I was like, 'Huh,'" he explained. "I was like, 'Nah.' But then I was so impressed at the detail that this person went into... the guy who formulated this theory. I was just amazed at the amount of attention that people are paying to the show. I mean, he was looking at the colors of my vest and my suit, and extrapolating off of that."
Prior to the premiere of the series in September, showrunner Bruno Heller shared that the Joker would be teased in early episodes, but he didn't share plans to reveal the devious character.
So, if the Penguin turns out not to be the Joker, it's possible that Detective Jim Gordon will run into the villain while working at Arkham Asylum, where he was assigned to work during the mid-season finale of "Gotham."
