Golden Globe 2015 Nominees & Predictions:A Look at the Latinos Nominated for the Prestigious Ceremony
On Sunday, Jan. 11, the Golden Globes will be handed out, and a number of Latino artists are up for nominations.
The biggest nominee of the night is "Birdman," a film by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, the Mexican auteur. While the film does not star any Latino actors, the movie is a great representation of how much influence Inarritu has had on the Hollywood industry. Additionally, the film is the front-runner to win the comedy Best Picture award. If it does, it would be the second Inarritu film to win a Best Picture Golden Globe. In 2007, the director won Best Picture for his dramatic work "Babel."
Inarritu's work has been represented at the Globes over a number of years as his feature "Biutiful" was nominated for Best Foreign Film in 2011 as well as his first feature "Amores Perros" in 2001.
Inarritu's "Birdman" is nominated for seven, more than any other film, and among those nominations are two for Inarritu. The helmer is nominated for the Best Director category, the second in his career. In 2006, he was nominated for "Babel," but lost to Martin Scorsese. Inarritu was also nominated for the writing category alongside his "Birdman" co-writers Armando Bo and Nicolas Giacobone.
Antonio Sanchez is nominated for his original music in the film. The drummer was controversially eliminated from the Oscar competition because the Academy thought the music was not original and it did not play throughout the film. However, Sanchez could win the Globe as the organization hardly ever matches the Academy.
In the Animated Feature Film competition, one of the nominees is Jorge R. Gutierrez's feature "The Book of Life." Even though it scored mixed reviews, the feature was a mild success at the box office and features a great Latino cast. The film stars Diego Luna, Zoe Saldana, Kate del Castillo, Danny Trejo, Placido Domingo, Sandra Ecehverria, Guillermo del Toro and Ana de La Reguera. It also features the music of the two time Academy Award winner Gustavo Santaolalla and is produced by del Toro. It is unlikely the movie will take home the award, but the nomination is a sign of how much support Latino actors have been getting as of late in Hollywood.
Puerto Rican born actor Joaquin Phoenix is also nominated for his work in the feature "Inherent Vice." The movie is a roller-coaster ride, but Phoenix's work is a marvel. His nomination is the only one for the feature, and it is his fifth Golden Globe nomination. It is also his third consecutive following a line of nominations for "Her" and "The Master."
Other Latinos nominated this year for Golden Globes include Louis C.K. for his work on "Louie" and Gina Rodriguez for her work on "Jane the Virgin." "Jane the Virgin" is also nominated for Best Music or Comedy Television series. The television series tells the story of a young, devout woman who discovers that she was accidentally artificially inseminated.
There will also be a number of Latino celebrities presenting, including Lupita Nyong'o, Jennifer Lopez and Salma Hayek.
The Golden Globes are one of the most popular awards ceremonies because all the big celebrities attend. It mixes both TV and film, and it is one of the few where audiences are able to see two different mediums converge. It is also one of the most glamorous evenings as all the stars wear attire from the best couture in the industry.
It is also an evening that Oscar prognosticators look out for because the winner of the Globe usually goes on to win the Academy Award.
The Golden Globes will be presented on Jan. 11 at 5 p.m. PT and will be seen in 192 countries.
