Anna’s rape at the hands of Green, Lord Gilligham’s valet, in Season 4 of Downton Abbey caused a stir as it depicted how she was violently attacked.

Played by Joanne Froggatt, the scene and her subsequent portrayal of Anna following the ordeal has earned the British actor a Golden Globe -- her first.

Froggatt, who has played Anna Bates since the show first aired, had not been nominated for a Golden Globe until this year, though she had been nominated at other award shows.

This was Froggatt’s first Golden Globe win, which she won for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television, and she dedicated her award to survivors of rape.

She told the crowd about the letters she received from rape survivors after the episode aired.

"One woman summed up the thoughts of many by saying she wasn't sure why she'd written but she just felt in some way she wanted to be heard," Froggatt said, according to the Telegraph.

"I'd like to say, I heard you and I hope saying this so publicly in some way means you feel the world hears you."

After she came off the stage, she talked more about the letters and how these women’s stories impacted her.

"They are the most special letters I have ever received in my life. It was incredibly touching to me that these women were able to be so candid with me and trust me with their stories. It's something very removed and different from what I normally do for a living,” she said, adding that the story line was a “big responsibility.”

Froggatt beat out veterans like Kathy Bates and favorites like “Orange Is the New Black's” Uzo Abuda as well as “True Detective” star Michelle Monaghan and Allison Janney from “Mom.”

Nonetheless, she was thrilled and courteous, reports the Express.

“I just had a moment meeting the wonderful Kathy Bates,” she said.
"I'd like to thank Julian Fellowes, our brilliant writer, for giving me the responsibility of the storyline."

She also thanked her husband and parents.
