Video game aficionados were affected by an outage of Sony's PlayStation Network on Tuesday, but the Japanese company was able to resolve the issue by Wednesday afternoon.

IGN said PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 users had reported issues accessing the service, and Sony acknowledged their troubles.

"We are aware that some users are experiencing difficulty logging into the (PlayStation Network)," a notice on the network's support page read.

The company said it would update players on developments and thanked them for their patience.

At around 3 p.m. Eastern time, Sony announced via its official PlayStation support Twitter account that the connectivity issues had been resolved.

"Update: the PSN connectivity issues reported earlier have been resolved. Thanks for your patience!" the tweet said.

American video game developer Bungie was following the outage closely, as users of its hit "Destiny" were among the first to report problems when trying to log into the online service.

"We're investigating issues impacting some of our PS3 and PS4 users from logging into 'Destiny,'" the company said on Twitter. "Thanks for your patience."

Even before Sony gave the all-clear, Bungie revealed that "the issue preventing PlayStation users from logging into Destiny (had) been resolved."

"Destiny" is a first-person shooter video game that had been played by some 13 million people by the end of 2014, according to Eurogamer. Besides the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, it can also be played on the Xbox 360 and Xbox One consoles.

Tuesday's outage was apparently unrelated to a previously scheduled downtime intended for network maintenance, Express reports. Due to the efforts, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 users were likely to be unable to access a range of online services as of noon Eastern time on Thursday, Sony warned.

"We expect this maintenance to last approximately 4 hours," the company advised. "During this time, we will deploy a series of back-end improvements to the network."

Once normal functioning after the unscheduled outage was resolved, meanwhile, a spike in user activity led to some additional problems for gamers, IGN reports.

"Some latency may be experienced due to high volume," Sony acknowledged.

The company recommended that anyone experiencing issues after the PlayStation Network was fully restored contact its customer care, it said in a statement.
