Mike Krzyzewski became the first NCAA Division I men's basketball coach to win 1,000 games after the Duke Blue Devils scored a come-from-behind win over the St. John's Red Storm on Sunday at Madison Square Garden.

Krzyzewski was in danger of missing the milestone as the Blue Devils were still behind by 10 points with 8:15 left in the game, but Duke stars Tyus Jones, Jahlil Okafor and Quinn Cook sparked an 18-2 run to end the game to give their coach the 1,000th victory of his coaching career.

"I'm glad it's over," Krzyzewski said in a post-game interview. "There will be others that win more, but it is kind of neat to be the first one to 1,000. I am proud of that, too. It's not just the number of wins, but the quality of opponents we've had."

In his 40-year coaching career, Krzyzewski has racked up a 1,000-308 record. He started his coaching career as head coach of his alma mater, Army, in 1975. In 35 seasons with the Blue Devils, Krzyzewski holds a 927-249 record, leading the Blue Devils to four national championships and 11 Final Four stints.

In November 2011, Krzyzewski broke the record for most number of wins in Division I basketball when he scored his 903rd victory, erasing the previous record by his mentor Bob Knight. Curiously, the 67-year-old also broke that record at Madison Square Garden.

"It's a remarkable accomplishment to win as many games as Mike has as a coach," Bob Knight said in a statement. "However, being able to coach as well as he has for as many years as he has is even more remarkable."

Several former Duke players witnessed the event along with NBA superstar Carmelo Anthony and New York Knicks president Phil Jackson, who is also one of the best coaches in the history of the sport. Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James, who played for Coach K with the USA national basketball team, praised Krzyzewski on Twitter.

"Coach K you're flat out unbelievable and it's a true honor having u as my coach throughout FIBA play. U showed me what it truly meant to represent my country and do it with dignity! Congratulations on 1K wins today!! Only right u did this," James posted on Twitter.
