Boxing News 2015: Miguel Cotto Considering Options for Next Fight, Gennady Golovkin Wants Title Unification Bout
Miguel Cotto is eyeing to defend his World Boxing Council middleweight title soon, and the Puerto Rican champion is considering several options after the talks for a fight against Saul "Canelo" Alvarez did not come to fruition.
Cotto, who won the WBC middleweight title with an impressive knockout win against former champion Sergio Martinez, was long linked to a fight against Alvarez, but Canelo's camp opted to face James Kirkland after not getting an answer from Cotto's camp before the deadline they set.
Gaby Peñagarícano, Cotto's adviser, revealed that they are looking at several options for the 34-year-old champion's next fight and are planning to name an opponent soon.
"We wanted the fight, but we were unable to reach an agreement and they made their decision," Peñagarícano told BoxingScene, referring to the proposed fight against Alvarez. "That's not a problem for us. There are several options available for Miguel. Miguel will review them and make a decision."
Cotto, who holds a 39-4 record with 32 knockouts and is 2-0 since hiring Hall of Famer Freddie Roach as his trainer, is being linked to a title unification bout against knockout specialist Gennady Golovkin, who is the mandatory challenger for Cotto's WBC middleweight title.
Golovkin, who is also the reigning World Boxing Association and International Boxing Organization middleweight champion, is set to defend his titles against Martin Murray on Feb. 21 in Monte Carlo, Monaca in a fight where a win could land him a fight against a big-name fighter.
And if he will have it his way, Golovkin, who boasts a perfect 31-0 record with 28 knockout victories, wants a bout against Cotto instead of facing other boxers linked to him like Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. The 32-year-old Kazakh said Cotto is on top of his list because he wants to unite the middleweight titles.
"I hope [that it happens next], this is the fight that I want," Golovkin said of facing Cotto. "This would be a very good fight for the fans, for television. I said that I want a pay-per-view fight this year. I want fights like Cotto, Canelo, Chavez. Cotto is the WBC champion. I want to get all of the titles at middleweight."
Cotto is also being linked to a rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr., who defeated him in their showdown in May 2012, but Top Rank Promotions CEO Bob Arum dismissed the rumored second match.
