Next NFL season may not begin until September, but general managers are gearing up for a big offseason of trades, free agent additions and draft selections.

The running back position has arguably the most to offer this offseason. Here are the top five free agent running backs this offseason:

1. DeMarco Murray

No doubt about this one. DeMarco Murray had an unbelievable season with a league-high 1,845 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns with the Dallas Cowboys. It will be interesting to see what Jerry Jones does because star wide receiver Dez Bryant is set to become a free agent as well. Murray is a bruising running back with good speed, and he's a great teammate to have. The only flaw with Murray is he sometimes fumbles the ball. The Cowboys may choose to franchise tag Murray, thus keeping him another year.

Possible Destinations: Oakland Raiders, Dallas Cowboys, Arizona Cardinals

2. Frank Gore

One of the most underrated running backs in recent memory. Frank Gore doesn't have the best speed, power or athleticism, but he doesn't have any weakness. He's one of the most balanced backs in the league, like an Emmitt Smith type of back. Gore is extremely consistent having rushing for more than 1,000 yards in eight of the last nine seasons. He will be turning 32 years old soon, but he can help a team with running issues. He may even want to consider a reduced role at his age.

Possible Destinations: Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos, Tennessee Titans

3. Justin Forsett

What a season Justin Forsett had this year. For the first time in his career, Forsett started more than five games, and he ran for 1,266 yards and eight touchdowns. The Baltimore Ravens rode Forsett to a playoff appearance and victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Wild Card round. The Ravens would love to re-sign Forsett for the right price, but we still haven't seen a lot out of him as he has started just 21 career regular season games.

Possible Destinations: Baltimore Ravens, Atlanta Falcons, San Diego Chargers

4. C.J. Spiller

Buyer beware. C.J. Spiller is a young talented running back who has exceptional speed. In 2011 he ran for 1,244 yards and the very next year, 933 yards. There's no doubt Spiller was a great back with the Buffalo Bills, but he gets injured a lot. This previous season, Spiller broke his collarbone, thus missing six games. Spiller could be a nice addition for the right price, but his workload will have to be restricted because of health. Like Gore, Spiller may also want to consider a reduced role.

Possible Destinations: Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, St. Louis Rams

5. Shane Vereen

Shane Vereen isn't a prototypical running back, but he can make a difference. This season for the New England Patriots, Vereen had 391 rushing yards and 447 receiving yards. Again, he won't do a lot of damage between the tackles, but he can spread the field and help the quarterback when under pressure. In the 2015 Super Bowl, Vereen had a game-high 11 catches from Tom Brady. Vereen won't attract top dollar on the open market, but he'll have some bidders who need short range help offensively.

Possible Destinations: New England Patriots, New York Giants, Cleveland Browns

The NFL free agent and trading period begins on March 10 at 4 p.m. EST.

Other notable free agent running backs include: Ryan Mathews, Mark Ingram, Darren McFadden, Stevan Ridley, Jacquizz Rodgers, Roy Helu, Ahmad Bradshaw and Ronnie Brown.
