2016 Presidential Election Candidates Odds: Elizabeth Warren's Potential Presidential Bid Gains Iowa, New Hampshire Support, Says YouGov Poll
The more people familiarized with Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., the greater her appeal to potential voters has increased.
A recent YouGov survey, conducted on behalf of Democracy America and MoveOn.org Political Action's Run Warren Run, polled likely Democratic Iowa caucus goers and New Hampshire primary voters on the Massachusetts senator. Survey respondents were told about Warren's biography and issue positions and then polled on whether or not she should run for president.
One discovery from the poll is 79 percent of respondents, from both states, stated they want Warren to run and defeated all other potential Democratic candidates in head-to-head questions. In a hypothetical challenge against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Warren won 31 percent to 24 percent by likely Iowa causes attendees and 30 percent to 27 percent among New Hampshire primary voters.
"YouGov's poll shows what the hundreds of thousands of people who have joined the Run Warren Run campaign already know-Elizabeth Warren's story and vision are powerfully compelling," said Anna Galland, executive director of MoveOn.org Civic Action. "When likely primary voters and caucus goers in Iowa and New Hampshire learn about how Elizabeth Warren fights for working and middle class families and stands up to Wall Street and powerful interests, they want her to run for president."
More than 90 percent of respondents agreed on Warren's statements about the government wrongfully giving students the same low student loan rates as the big banks and her stance on expanding social security and breaking up the large banks.
"These poll results prove that Senator Warren, should she decide to enter the 2016 presidential race, would be a clear favorite with voters on the critical, income inequality issues that will define the election," said Democracy for America Executive Director Charles Chamberlain on the poll.
Chamberlain noted respondents' view of Iowa and New Hampshire voters wanting a competitive primary process since it is good for the political party, candidates and voters.
"Since Ready for Warren started this movement, we've changed the conversation about the 2016 race and mobilized a groundswell of support across the country," said Ready for Warren Campaign Manager Erica Sagrans. "The new YouGov poll shows that Warren's vision resonates with voters - from the need stop growing income inequality to helping students struggling with debt and making sure banks don't become too big to fail. This poll shows that Democrats, no matter who they support, want a choice in the nomination process. Our message to Senator Warren is this: Voters are ready for you to run for president."
Warren, however, has dismissed claims she will run for president. During an interview with NPR mid-December, she said, "I am not running for president." Warren would reiterate her stance later in the interview, stating, "I am not running for president. Do you want me to put an exclamation point on the end of it?"
MoveOn and Democracy for America have acknowledged Warren's intention not to run for president, but noted, "If she were running, there wouldn't be a need for a draft effort. We launched the Run Warren Run campaign to show Senator Elizabeth Warren the tremendous amount of grassroots enthusiasm and momentum that exists for her entering the 2016 presidential race and to encourage her to change her mind."
The YouGov survey was conducted between Jan. 30 and Feb. 5, with 800 people participating.
