Samsung Galaxy S6 Release Date, Specs, News & Rumors: Smartphone to Have 5 Megapixel Front-Facing Camera, Two Different Versions
Samsung senior vice president and head of the Camera R&D Group Dong Hoon Jang highlighted on the company blog recent work to improve the front-facing camera on all their devices, suggesting the soon-to-be-released flagship Galaxy S6 will have at least a 5 megapixel sensor up front, if not something greater.
Jang explains how each new generation of camera has more than 10,000 photo-captures of testing in different types of lighting. He describes this year's flagship camera as "intelligent" and that it does "all the thinking for users, allowing them to take amazing pictures under any conditions" with a simple tap of the shutter button.
The change suggests that Samsung has taken note of the Apple iPhone camera, which generates a usable shot no matter how hastily a user presses the shutter button. The camera quality and ease of functionality is important to users, something Samsung has likely realized.
Bloomberg reports that Samsung will release two versions of the flagship, both of which will have all-metal bodies, which is a first for Samsung who has long used the plastic aesthetic.
If this is true, the company has stepped up its game with a premium offering.
One version of the Galaxy S6 will feature a wraparound screen with the display spilling over the right and left edges. Both versions will feature 5.1-inch displays.
"Samsung need a model with new technology to stop the iPhone juggernaut and to distinguish it from others," Lee Sang Hun, a Seoul-based analyst at HI Investment & Securities Co, told Bloomberg. "Although Samsung is continuing to release cheaper models globally to defend its market share, the next S phone is more important because that's where they make money."
The electronics company debuted the Galaxy Note Edge, its first device with a multiple-sided screen, last year. The Galaxy Note Edge's 5.6-inch phone has a display that stretches down the right side so users can read messages and more from an angle, according to Bloomberg.
We will know for certain what Samsung has to offer on March 1 when it unveils everything at the Mobile World Congress in Spain.
