The day of romance we call Valentine's Day takes place on Feb. 14 and is named for a Christian martyr and dates back to the fifth century. It also has origins in the ancient holiday Lupercalia believed to be a pre-Roman pastoral festival observed on Feb. 13-15 to purify the city, avert evil spirits and promote health and fertility.

While traditional gifts on Valentine's Day include greeting cards, candy and red roses, Birkbeck University and Harley Street clinics in London conducted a study that reveals what women really want is a romantic dinner for two and sex toys, reports Business Insider. Scientists fitted 20 volunteer couples to electroenchephalogical (EEG) headsets and measured women's brain-wave patterns in response to gifts from their significant others. The results showed that 75 percent of women preferred a romantic meal for two, 65 percent liked sex toys and 60 percent found lingerie pleasing. Red roses and chocolates were the least desirable.
