'Revenge Porn' Website Creator Hunter Moore Pleads Guilty to Hacking, Identify Theft: Is Anyone Up Founder Faces 7 Years
The man who once ran an infamous "revenge porn" website pleaded guilty to hacking and identity theft on Thursday and is facing up to seven years in prison.
Hunter Moore, 28, was dubbed the "most hated man on the Internet" for operating the now-defunct site IsAnyoneUp.com, which posted sexuality explicit photos and information of mostly women without their consent, reports BBC. Typically, the racy photos would be submitted by a scorned ex-lover or ex-boyfriend in order to shame or embarrass the women.
According to court papers filed on Wednesday in a Los Angeles federal court, Moore agreed to plead guilty to posting stolen nude photos online. He faces between two and seven years in federal prison under the agreement, said Thom Mrozek, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office, reports the Associated Press.
Prosecutors say that Moore, of Woodland, paid Charles Evens to hack into email accounts and steal nude photos. Evens, 26, of Los Angeles, has entered a not guilty plea and is scheduled for trial in March.
Moore, who was arrested in Jan. 2014 following an FBI investigation, is scheduled to return to court on Wednesday, Feb. 25.
"I'm pleased he's going to prison," said Charlotte Laws, the mother of one of Moore's alleged victims who helped prompt the FBI probe into his website. "I think it gives him and his followers time to grow up and get out of their mysogynistic, childish hating of women and trying to ruin their lives," she added, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Between 2010 and 2012, Moore's website published pictures of an "American Idol" finalist, the daughter of a major U.S. Republican party donor and a woman in a wheelchair, reported Rolling Stone magazine in 2012. He was also dubbed as the "king of revenge porn."
According to the Times, he once told a reporter that "I understand it can hurt your reputation and your job and yadda yadda yadda."
