Presidential Election: Kentucky Senator Rand Paul Likely to Announce 2016 Presidential Run in April
Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul will likely make an official announcement in early April regarding his political ambitions in the 2016 presidential race.
Inside sources said the junior Republican senator has marked April 7 as the date he will likely launch his campaign for the White House in his home state, reports The New York Times.
"Anything that I do, you know I'm from Kentucky, will be in Kentucky," the Libertarian-leaning official said on Friday, according to The Associated Press.
However, because Kentucky law restricts candidates from campaigning for both president and Congress at the same time, Paul will make an effort to convince state Republican Party leaders to create a presidential caucus in 2016. In effect, this would allow him to run for president and for re-election to his Senate seat without appearing on the primary ballot twice.
"You have a better chance asking your fellow party members than you do asking the judiciary," Paul said.
He also said, if GOP leaders approve the caucus, it would only give him the opportunity to run in the primary. If he is also elected as the Republican nominee, then it would likely need a judge's order to appear on the general election ballot twice.
"We think there are valid, constitutional arguments for why states can't have different rules so Wisconsin we don't think can have different rules for who can be eligible for office than Kentucky can," he said. "It's optimistic to think that we would have a general election issue."
In the interim, Paul has been traveling around the country and testing the waters to see if "maybe a different kind of Republican might be the kind of Republican that can win" the 2016 race.
During his appearance at Sullivan University on Friday, he discussed legislation he authored with Democratic Sen. Cory Booker, which would allow expunge juveniles charged with nonviolent crimes.
