KFC Menu to Add Scoff-ee Cup: Aromatic Edible Chocolate Coffee Container Introduced to Help Reduce Waste [Pic]
KFC wants customers to drink their coffee and then eat the cup.
The fast food company is testing out an edible coffee cup, which will be like eating a cookie, in the United Kingdom, USA Today reports. The cup will be made of all edible ingredients including sugar paper and heat-resistant white chocolate Named the "Scoff-ee Cup," the cup's chocolate will slowly melt as customers drink the coffee. Once the customer gets done drinking the coffee, they will be able to eat the cup.
The idea for the edible coffee cup is designed to please Millenial customers, who want packaging like coffee cups to leave less waste.
KFC worked with experimental food experts The Robin Collective on the Scoff-ee Cup. Besides being edible, the cup will also have a pleasant aroma of either coconut, fresh cut grass or wildflowers.
"If our customers occasionally like to have their cake and eat it, why wouldn't they want to have their cup and eat it, instead? KFC spokeswoman Jocelyn Bynoe said.
According to Bynoe, KFC has been experimenting with edible packaging for some time. KFC wants to see if edible packaging could work in certain markets before rolling it out company-wide.
The U.S. could be a good market for KFC to add edible packaging. Recycling is at a 34.5 percent rate overall in the U.S. and a 51 percent rate for packaging. That is much lower than many other developed countries Darby Hoover, senior resource specialist at the Natural Resources Defense Council says.
"Companies that make these packages have an obligation to help ensure those packages aren't wasted," she says. "Edible packaging has the potential to be a meaningful part of that opportunity."
In the U.S., Cronut creator Dominque Ansel sells edible cookie cups that hold his milk and cookie shots at his New York City shops. On the West Coast, Alfred Coffee & Kitchen coffee shops offers the "Alfred Cone," a coffee cup dipped in chocolate, according to the Huffington Post.
KFC plans to test out the Scoff-ee Cup while unveiling Seattle's Best Coffee to its restaurants.
