Rosie Perez Teams Up With 'Seinfeld' Co-Creator Larry David on Broadway in "Fish in the Dark," Admits Weird Crush on the 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' Star
Actress and "The View" co-host Rosie Perez dishes a lot on the on-goings in pop culture and the news on the popular talk show, but it's what she said yesterday on "TODAY" that really got the hilarious gossip wheels in motion!
Perez, who recently starred in her longtime friend John Leguizamo's "Fugly!" spoke to Matt Lauer about landing her acting gig on Larry David's new play, "Fish in the Dark," which hits Broadway on March 5. During the interview, she admitted that she's got a strange crush on the "Seinfeld" co-creator and "Curb Your Enthusiasm" star.
"I've fallen in love with this man!" Perez, told "TODAY" Co-host Matt Lauer on Thursday. "He's odd, he's weird, he's crotchety, he's all those things and I love him!"
Actress Jennifer Lawrence also has this odd affection for David as well. In an interview last year, Lawrence confessed to Vanity Fair that she was "in love with" David, "and I have been for a really long time." Who knew! "She definitely has that kind of crush," Lauer added.
Perez admitted that her affection for David, 67, didn't happen right away. "Sorry Larry ... but when I first heard [what Lawrence said], I was like, 'Are you kidding?'"
Once she shared the stage with David...well, the rest is history.
"Now that I'm working with him ... I'm getting those same sensations that Jennifer Lawrence is having....," Perez explained. "He's a man who knows who he is, and that's powerful and that's attractive.... He's funny, he's attractive. He's a teddy bear. He's sweet, and he's kind, and he's generous and he doesn't even want [you] to know that."
Now if only more men could feel that way about successful and talented women in showbiz who are 'of a certain age!'
"Fish in the Dark" tickets have been selling like wildfire - and that's only during its preview.
"I have friends calling me that I haven't heard from in 20 years, emails off the hook, texts off the hook, phones off the hook. People are ringing my doorbell. It's disgusting," Perez said. "Al Roker asked me for a ticket. I said, 'I can't help you, guy.' "
Perez said she received the news of her role while she was with a friend at the Las Vegas Boxing Hall of Fame event and screamed right on the spot.
"I started screaming my head off!" she added.
What's "Fish in the Dark" about?
"There's a death in the family the bottom of the floor falls out and chaos ensures, and I am a part of that catalyst," Perez explained. "The show is a little bit long because we have to wait for the laughter to die off!"
This marks the first time that David returns to the stage since eighth grade, in a brand-new Broadway comedy in which he also wrote. David plays Norman Drexel, "a character who is very much like... Larry David."
Besides David and Perez, "Fish in the Dark" also stars: Rita Wilson, Ben Shenkman, Lewis J. Stadlen, Jayne Houdyshell, Jake Cannavale, Marylouise Burke, Jerry Adler, Jenn Lyon, Jonny Orsini, Molly Ranson, Maria Elena Ramirez, Rachel Resheff, Joel Rooks, Jeff Still, Kenneth Tigar, and Richard Topol.
"A Fish in the Dark," is currently in previews, and opens officially on March 5, 2015 and will be on Broadway for eighteen weeks only.
