'Sister Wives' Divorce: Meri Divorces Kody So He Can Legally Adopt Robyn's Children
Kody Brown's first wife, Meri, made a sacrifice to divorce him so that he could legally marry Robyn, his fourth spiritual wife, HollywoodLife.com reports.
Some polygamy critics started to believe that Kody had dumped his older wives for his younger wife. The truth is that Robyn wants Kody to adopt her three children from a previous marriage and has to legally marry him in order to get that done, Meri revealed.
Robyn said her first husband is absent from her three children's lives. Kody has been taking care of 15-year-old Dayton, 12-year-old Aurora and Breanna, 9.
"I'm their dad," Kody expressed.
"If anything happened to Robyn, we'd have no legal claim on Dayton, Aurora and Breanna," Meri said after she secretly visited a lawyer to end her legal 24-year marriage with Kody, adding that the three children are a part of their family.
Kody's second spiritual wife, Janelle, worried that he'll start favoring Robyn more once they are legally married.
It is not yet clear if Meri's selfless act would even guarantee an adoption since Robyn's children's biological father will have to relinquish his rights as their father. He still has the say so even if he does not financially support them or spend a lot of time with them.
"I'm not going to lie -- it is a little bit scary for me doing this divorce," Meri confessed, according to the International Business Times. "And having it really be for nothing as far as the possibility of not being able to adopt the kids."
"I just want those kids adopted. I want to know we have them," Christine, Kody's third spiritual wife, said.
Kody was afraid for the divorce and just hopes that nothing changes between he and Meri. She assured him that nothing will change and that she is only doing the divorce for the kids.
