TBS Conan O'Brien Show Recap 2015: Late Night Show Host Records Episode in Cuba, Learns Salsa
Relations between Cuba and the United States are improving enough that a U.S.-based late-night TV show was able to travel to Cuba and record an episode. Conan O'Brien did it and showed fans what it is like to travel to Cuba.
"Conan" opened the show with O'Brien strutting around and dancing to some music being played for him while he wore an all white suit and top hat.
O'Brien explains the story behind the Cuba and U.S. travel restriction. He says that now that things that have improved between the two countries he is visiting the country for one reason: to meet the people and try to make friends.
As he strolls down the streets, O'Brien tries to say hello in Spanish to many of the dogs barking at him. They do not seem happy to see him, though.
As O'Brien travels throughout the city of Havanna, he tells a salsa band leader that he would like to learn how to play salsa.
O'Brien learns the pattern of salsa and starts to get the hang of it. He asks some of the band members to be honsest and tell him if they want him in the band. One member smiles and shakes his head no.
The band still gives him a chance to sing the limited Spanish he knows and he puts together a string of some funny misplaced words to the tune.
In the next clip, O'Brien tries to improve his limited Spanish by heading to a teacher who offers to give him a lesson. The teacher offers up some slang words and phrases to get Conan through his trip to Cuba.
In another clip, O'Brien heads to a cigar factory to help make his own cigars. He finds out that it takes nine months to a year to learn how to roll a Cuban cigar. Nonetheless, O'Brien tries to roll one.
After O'Brien tries to roll his own cigar, he has the factory's inspector check over his work. She is not happy and does not approve of the cigar's shape or size.
The rest of the episode has O'Brien learning Cuban Rumba dancing, viewing a Havanna sunset from a rooftop and visiting a family owned Cuban restaurant.
