It's no secret that the United States and Cuba haven't gotten along very well since 1959.

Since Fidel Castro became the leader of the small island nation that year, relations between the US and Cuba have been highlighted with the Cuban Missile Crisis, security issues and constant travel restrictions.

But if there's one thing Americans and Cubans can agree on, it's baseball.

Baseball is "Americas Past Time" and it is the single most popular sport in Cuba today. Luckily for Cuban residents who love the game, Major League Baseball could soon be coming to Cuba. According to multiple reports, Major League Baseball is considering playing games in Cuba in the future. If this were to happen, it would obviously be spring training exhibition games that don't count towards the regular season standings.

MLBPA (Players Union) President Tony Clark recently told ESPN that MLB was looking to begin exhibition games this year, but "there wasn't enough time to finalize details." Correct indeed considering spring training has already begun.

"It is conceivable somewhere down the road that there may be a spring training game played in Cuba, but it's hard to tell when at this point in time" Clark said. "I think what's great is that you look around any locker room now and you appreciate how international and how global our game is. It seems like every Cuban player who comes over here is contributing significantly to our game and it's beneficial for everyone. There is intrigue. There is interest. I'm very interested to see what happens here," Clark later stated.

More and more the "big four" sports are beginning to go global. The National Basketball Association annually holds games in Europe as well as 2014 preseason games in Brazil, Turkey, Germany and China. Even the National Football League plays in London, England now every season. MLB has played in Australia and various Asian countries year in and year out, and Cuba could be next for them. One thing that makes Cuba a very good spot for MLB teams is the close proximity. Havana is closer to many US cities on the East coast than other MLB teams are on the West coast.

Cuba, like so many other Latin American nations, is filled with talented young baseball players. Just last season we witnessed one of the greatest rookie seasons ever thanks to Jose Abreu of the Chicago White Sox.

Still, many baseball fans remain skeptical on the subject. Although the US and Cuba continue to normalize relations with one another, there are some who believe it could be dangerous. Many young Cuban baseball players will do anything to defect the country, and several Americans do not believe the two countries should do business with each other as long as Cuba is still communist. There are also MLB fans that don't want any games being played outside the US. But it is important to note that MLB has had two Canadian teams including the Toronto Blue Jays and Montreal Expos.

Regular season MLB games will definitely take a while, if ever, but it's certainly the right way to begin. Experimenting with spring training exhibition games would be an excellent idea to start this process off, and see if it could work long-term in the future.
