Hunger Games 2 Catching Fire Release: Patrick St. Esprit Hopes The Film Will Open Doors For Him
Patrick St. Esprit, who plays the evil Commander Thread in "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" talks about being a villain and future rolls.
Patrick St. Esprit, also known as Elliot Oswald from T.V's "Sons of Anarchy" says he's okay with being a villain. "Any notice is a good notice...every once in a while, I think there's a level of seriousness to (people's reactions) but I take that as a great compliment" he tells Variety.
Some actors just have that villain demeanor and Patrick just seems to be one of those actors. He is okay with being chosen for the dark side, in fact he is used to it, saying that "when [he] was younger, a lot of [his] guest spots on television were playing bad guys" which he admits "served him well, [being bad] gave me more opportunities to explore a character".
In "Catching Fire" he is the despicable commander who flogs a defenseless Gale, played by Liam Hemsworth, while he is tied to a pole. The popular scene was made part of the movie's trailer, as Katniss steps in, daring Commander Thread to kill her instead of continuing to beat Gale. The violent scene was even "toned down" for the final release of the movie, that's how much of a great job St. Esprit did. Of course beating Liam Hemsworth maniacally, is just something we don't want to see and affecting the ratings is the last thing producers wanted. You got lucky Hemsworth.
"Catching Fire" brought in about $161.1 million just in North America, topping November's opening sales. Because of this and the tremendous performance he put on, St. Esprit "hopes that [this] opens up more doors". Since "The Hunger Games" has proved to be a legendary film, Patrick is keeping the faith that the movie will lead him to more offers. Even though reports say that he is a friendly and sweet guy in real life, it seems like he won't be the protagonist of any romance movie anytime soon. Hey, if being evil is what you're good at then stick with it?
