Cartoon character lovers everywhere look forward to the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City, but this year, those lovable balloons may not even leave the ground thanks to Winter Storm Boreas.

According to The Weather Channel, Boreas will arrive in the New York City area tonight.

"New York City could see sustained winds between 15 and 25 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph," Alan Raymond, weather.com meteorologist, said.

According New York City rules, balloons like Snoopy, Sonic, Spider-Man and Spongebob Squarepants must stay on the cement if winds are above 23 miles per hour or if gusts are above 23 miles per hour, CBS2 New York reports. The tallest balloon this year is five stories high.

"At this time, it is too early to make any determinations on the flight of the giant balloons," Orlando Veras, Macy's spokesman, told Huffington Post. "On Thanksgiving morning, Macy's works closely with the NYPD, who, based on real time weather data and the official regulations, determine if the balloons will fly and at what heights."

According to organizers of the Macy's Parade, they will examine the affects of Boreas on Thursday before deciding to whether balloons will travel upon its parade route from 9.a.m. until noon.

Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is begins at Central Park West and 77th St. It then turns on Columbus Circle before traveling south on 6th Ave and concluding at the Macy's in Herald Square. A handy pdf of the route is here.

In addition to large flying balloons, the parade is equipped with novelty balloons, balloonicles, floats, marching bands, performance groups and clowns. Performers include Kellie Pickler, Ariana Grande, Austin Mahone, Miss America 2014 Nina Davuluri, Richard Simmons, Cher Lloyd and more.
