'Downton Abbey' Cast & News: Lady Rose Actress Lily James Credits PBS Show in Helping Her Get 'Cinderella' [Watch]
Lily James will be staring as the new Cinderella in Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of the beloved animated film, and she thanks her work as Lady Rose MacClare on “Downton Abbey” for giving her this opportunity.
To many “Downton Abbey” fans, 25-year-old James is Lady Rose, the immature but loving cousin of Lord and Lady Grantham; however, she will now be known as Cinderella as the British actor takes on the role.
According to the Toronto Sun, though, James does not think she could have gotten the role had it not been for “Downton Abbey.”
“It just has changed everything in a way,” she said about co-starring in “Downton Abbey.”
“Not in ways that people would expect, like lifestyle or being recognized because that’s not what I really get, especially in England. But it’s changed my life in that I really, really don’t think I would have gotten Ella (in ‘Cinderella’) without having done ‘Downton.’ That show enabled me to be seen more -- and that’s all you really want as an actor, to be able to be seen for stuff. So I’m grateful.”
This new “Cinderella” will not be like the classic animated film, though it will have all the same characters. Director Kenneth Branagh has maintained a classic aesthetic while revamping the themes so that they correlate more with modern times.
He said the reboot allows them to “to present a strong and empowered woman at the centre of it” who makes her own choices.
The movie also gives Prince Charming, played by “Game of Thrones” star Richard Madden, a bigger role.
Despite the success the film will most likely be and the new doors that have opened for James as a result of taking on the tole, she hopes to return to “Downton Abbey.”
Though Lady Rose, now married to Atticus Aldridge, has gone to America, she told Radio Times she hopes to return.
"I hope to be doing the next series if it happens, for sure," she said.
"You never know what Julian's going to write. ... I'm obsessed with ‘Downton,’ and I love playing Lady Rose so if there's another series next year I hope to be in it."
