The Macy's Thanksgiving Parade started 87-years ago in Manhattan, New York. The "Believe" retailer is a part of history even being featured in classic movies like "Miracle on 34th Street". Without Macy's it almost feels like the holidays in New York would just not be complete. But the Macy's Parade wasn't always "high-tech" and glamorous. Back in it's first years the parade was very simple and humble, as those times also were. That also allows us to be humored by how creepy the first Macy's Day Parade balloons were!

Called "The Christmas Parade" back in 1927 when the parade made its debut, it was organized and performed by only Macy's employees. The very first balloon inflated was Felix the Cat, which made the huge balloons a tradition of the parade for years to come. Back then, the helium balloons were all released into the New York air for a week, whoever could retrieve a deflated balloon would win a $100 prize. In those times, a $100 dollars could pay your rent, give you a massive shopping spree at Macy's and feed your entire family! Oh the good times.

The giant balloons were also extremely creepy, since it was the era of simplicity and actually the years leading into America's Great Depression. Even through all of this, America found joy through bringing a smile to all New Yorkers. Luckily, the children were too happy to be frightened or understand the creepy helium giants (smiley face emojii). Here are my picks for the funniest/creepiest balloons of those times; from "not so creepy to "warning: very weird".

5. Spotted Pig-The 1932 piggy looked scared and not so happy to be someone's Christmas ham soon.

4. The Dying Alligator-The 1932 alligator featured a weapon still on the alligators head...now that's not very "kid friendly" is it?

3. Disembodied Head and Terrified Woman-A 1930 series of balloons which featured, wide-eyed disembodied heads chasing down a terrified woman running for her life. Wait, how is this pleasant?

2. The Drunken Butler-The 1933 balloon says it all. A butler holding what seems to be a drink? Okay now I get it, maybe the parade was more for the adults than the kiddos?

1. Hung-over Superman-This Superman looked like a 56-year old, recently divorced, mid-way through alcoholism version of the superhero. Nice.
