'Cristela' Season 1 Episode 18 Spoilers: Cristela's Boss Wants Her to Side With Landlord Who Discriminates Against Minorities
“Cristela,” the surprise ABC sitcom hit of 2014, has brought a good deal of the Latino lifestyle to a primetime position.
The series, created by stand-up comedienne Cristela Alonzo, who stars in as well as writes for the show, deals with the touchy issue of having to deal with a family that might not buy into your big American dreams.
In her stand-up routines, Alonzo is fearless and does not seem to mind provoking anyone. She has called Arizona the Lindsay Lohan of the United States, joking how she never paid any attention to it and then one day it went crazy. She has begged bigots to get their prejudices straight before calling Mexicans lazy while blaming them for taking over all the jobs. And she has accused skinny girls of ruining Halloween.
As flippant as she seems to be in her act, Alonzo is taking her show into deep areas of social dilemma.
In an upcoming show entitled "Latino 101," Cristela will be forced to do some soul searching.
Trent, Cristela’s jerky boss, played with dependable smugness by veteran slime ball Sam McMurray, gets her to sit at his table for the trial of a landlord accused of not renting out rooms to minorities.
According to BroadwayWorld, Trent’s reason for doing this is all about showing how a minority is on the landlord's side.
Cristela, who knows all about sacrificing in order to get the hard work done, is faced with a tough choice as she has to decide whether or not to exploit an advantage she did not earn.
As all this takes place, Alberto (played by “Fluffy” fan favorite Gabriel J. Iglecias) begins to bond with Cristela’s ever critical mother Natalia (Terri Hoyos), and Daniela (played by María Canals Barrera) starts to get suspicious that perhaps Alberto is buttering up the matriarch of the family just to get to Cristela.
The new show comes out on Friday, March 27 at 8 p.m. ET.
The next episode, "Fifteen-Something," will have Cristela remembers her first date, which took place at a quinceañera.
