Ronda Rousey vs Laila Ali: UFC Champion Responds to Ali’s Public Shot
Ultimate Fighting Championship women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey responded to the recent tirades of former boxing champion Laila Ali against her.
Ali, who has retired from boxing in 2007 after winning in all 24 professional fights, recently said in an interview with TMZ Sports that Rousey cannot win against her if ever they will face each other, but also added that the idea is a long shot because boxing is different from mixed martial arts.
Still, the public comment made by Ali went viral online because Rousey, who holds a perfect 11-0 record inside the Octagon, is considered by many as the best woman fighting athlete today.
When asked about Ali's comment against her, Rousey said: "If she wants to take me up on that, I'm around. She's retired and has several kids."
Ali also said that Rousey will have no chance against her because of the size difference between them. The boxing champion is 5-foot-10 and 167 pounds, while Rousey is officially listed 5-foot-7 and 135 pounds.
"Of course not," Ali said in the TMZ Sports interview when asked if Rousey will have a chance to win against her. "She's too much smaller than me anyways. She's like the size of my daughter, my 3-year-old."
Responding to Ali, Rousey said that size will not matter if ever they will collide because it was a non-factor in all her fights inside the Octagon, including in her victory against Cat Zingano at UFC 184. Rousey kept her UFC women's bantamweight title with a win against Zingano via submission 14 seconds into the fight.
"I understand why she'd think that because she has a size advantage, but if you saw my last fight it had nothing to do with size or strength at all," Rousey said. "That's not how I beat people. So you can't count having a size and strength advantage as having a real advantage against me."
But while she does not think size and strength was a factor in her previous wins, Rousey also said in the same interview that she will still not entertain the idea of facing a male opponent because it would look she is promoting domestic violence.
"I don't think it's a great idea to have a man hitting a woman on television," Rousey added. "I'll never say that I'll lose, but you could have a girl getting totally beat up on TV by a guy -- which is a bad image to put across with all the football domestic violence stuff that's been happening, not a good idea."
