Wii U Video Game Sales & Update: Nintendo Heading to Mobile Devices, Reveals Next Console Is Code-Named NX
Nintendo games are headed to mobile devices, according to a press briefing. But that does not mean that Nintendo will stop making console games, Kotaku reports.
Nintendo's boss Satoru Iwata says that Nintendo is still very involved in the "dedicated video game system market." He added that their next planned hardware system is code-named the "NX."
"Nintendo has decided to deploy its video game business on smart devices, but it is not because we have lost our passion or vision for the business of dedicated video game systems", he said.
Nintendo will team up with Japanese mobile gaming company DeNA to develop and operate new games that will be specifically made for smartphones, according to IGN.
Instead of these games being transferred from existing Nintendo Wii U or 3DS games and onto smartphones, these games will be brand new and made just for smartphones.
"There are significant differences in the controls, strengths and weaknesses between the controllers for dedicated game systems and the touchscreens of smart devices," Iwata said. "We have no intention at all to port existing game titles for dedicated game platforms to smart devices because if we cannot provide our consumers with the best possible play experiences, it would just ruin the value of Nintendo's IP."
Now that Nintendo knows how they will use games on mobile devices, they will continue to focus on console games.
"As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business," Iwata adds, "let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand new concept under the development codename 'NX'"
Iwata did not offer up anymore information on the "NX," saying that Nintendo plans to share more information about the new hardware some time next year.
