A United Airlines flight headed for Denver from Washington, D.C. had to return after takeoff because of a “disturbance onboard” caused by a passenger.

Photos and video uploaded online show passengers subduing a man who attempted to enter the cockpit.

United Flight 1074 flying to Denver from Dulles International Airport in Washington D.C. returned to the airport last night after a passenger made a run for the cockpit and claimed to have bombs aboard the aircraft, according to NBC News.

Luke Punzenberger, a United spokesperson, said the Boeing 737 returned to Dulles “after a passenger failed to comply with crew instructions" and was arrested by local police. He failed to provide any further information. The suspect has yet to be identified.

However, a thread on Reddit explained what unfolded.

A user using the handle iLL_D posted a photo of the man, explaining his father was aboard.

“This just happened,” he wrote last night. “My father was on the plane and took this picture … He was screaming and sprinting towards the cockpit. Several large passengers tackled him before he even reached the door.”

The Reddit user also corroborated the man’s claims of having explosives aboard and said passengers had searched for the bombs.

A spokesperson for the airport, Kimberly Gibbs, said the man was “transported to a local hospital for evaluation” and said the plane returned “because of a disturbance,” according to the Washington Post.

The twin-engine Boeing 737 was carrying 33 passengers and six crewmembers and had been scheduled to leave Dulles at 10:15 p.m.

CNN reports government officials have confirmed the man was yelling “Jihad! Jihad!” as he headed to the cabin. Officials say so far they have no terror connections to the man and found no explosives.

Quoting records obtained from LiveATC.com, which provides audio from airline cockpits, CNN provided the interaction between the pilots and traffic control.

"He ran forward towards the cockpit, and he is being restrained by passengers," one of the pilots said. "The cockpit is secure, and we would just like to return to the airport and have the authorities meet him."

A video uploaded to YouTube shows passengers restraining the man as he asks for forgiveness following the incident.

"Don't move," one passenger says. "You're OK. We're going to get you off this plane, buddy."
