A man from central Missouri is facing federal charges for making several threats to shoot President Barack Obama with a high-powered rifle within the next few weeks.

Cameron Stout, 24, of Stover, was charged Tuesday in U.S. District Court in the capital of Missouri, Jefferson City, reports The Associated Press.

An affidavit from a Secret Service agent says Stout had multiple conversations during the past week with a confidential informant about plans to kill the president. The informant, who is a former member of the infamous white supremacist group Aryan Nation, told a Morgan County sheriff's deputy that Stout had asked him on Thursday for a high-powered rifle and assistance in a plan to shoot President Obama, Reuters reports.

The informant said he met with Stout and agreed to connect him with a high-ranking member of the Aryan Nation who could help him obtain a rifle and plan the attack, the affidavit said.

Stout drew diagrams of the Washington, D.C. area and talked about possible positions from which he could aim at the White House or a church where the president attends. He also discussed plans to shoot the president at sites where Obama might visit in Washington and Kansas City.

Stout also told the informant he had a .270-caliber rifle with a scope that he planned to use in his attack. In addition, he said he could shoot at a range of up to 200 yards, reports Connect Missouri.

A U.S. magistrate judge ordered Stout to make a brief appearance in court on Tuesday, while a preliminary hearing has been set for Thursday.

A public defender assigned to represent Stout, who is currently in federal custody, had no comment as of Tuesday, according to Reuters.
