Gennady Golovkin is still targeting a showdown against Miguel Cotto, and the unbeaten world champion wants the showdown to happen after his upcoming fight against Willie Monroe Jr. on May 16 at the Forum in Los Angeles.

Golovkin, who holds a perfect 32-0 record with 29 knockout victories under his belt, said in a recent interview that he is not taking Monroe lightly, knowing his 28-year-old challenger is looking to score a huge upset to get big fights.

The 32-year-old Kazakh said that he is focused on his training camp for the May 16 fight against Monroe. But when pressed to talk about the long-rumored title unification bout against Cotto, Golovkin said that the reigning World Boxing Council middleweight champion will be his focus after his upcoming fight.

"My work is in the ring and in my training camp," Golovkin said via Tha Boxing Voice. "A fight with Cotto, well that's a good question for the promoters. I think Miguel understands my situations. He knows I want to fight him. My focus will be on Miguel Cotto after this fight."

Golovkin, the reigning World Boxing Association and International Boxing Organization middleweight champion, has been chasing a fight against Cotto over the past several months, but the Puerto Rican reportedly has other plans in mind for his first title defense.

Promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions told BoxingScene on Wednesday that they reached out to Cotto and his camp about a possible showdown in May. Loeffler said that no negotiation was made since they did not get any response from the Puerto Rican champion.

"We didn't get a response from Cotto," Loeffler said of Cotto, who was required by the WBC to defend his title against Golovkin. "I reached out to his people and you can't negotiate if you don't even get a response. That's one of those fights where Cotto either has to fight him in the future or vacate the title, according to the WBC."

Cotto, who has not fought since winning the WBC middleweight title against Sergio Martinez in June last year, is planning to defend his title on June 6 in New York.

Recent reports indicated that his team is looking at several possible opponents, but International Boxing Federation middleweight champion Cornelius Bundrage is reportedly on top of their list.
