NFL Draft 2015 Predictions & Update: Jameis Wintson Says Tampa Bay Buccaneers Should Pick Him No. 1
Jameis Winston has no doubt in mind that he should be the first overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.
Winston displayed his skills in his pro day workout at the Florida State University practice facility on Tuesday. After the workout, the 21-year-old quarterback said that he should be picked No. 1 in the draft for one simple reason.
"Because I'm the best player in the draft," Winston said via ESPN.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers own the first pick in the 2015 NFL Draft later this month and are strongly considering picking Winston, but are also eyeing former Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota.
Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht and coach Lovie Smith were present during Winston's pro day along with offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter and quarterbacks coach Mike Bajakian.
Licht said that they liked what they saw from Winston, who threw 102 passes, completing 92 of his total attempts. His 102 attempts was quite high for a pro day because quarterbacks usually throw around 50 to 60 throws, but Winston said that he wanted to give scouts a better look on his passing skills.
"I think that puts a little bit of water on that, maybe puts that fire out," Licht said, referring to reports suggesting that Winston is out of shape. "He showed his arm strength from Throw 1 to Throw 100 or whatever it was."
Former star quarterback Kurt Warner, who was also present during the pro day workout, said that Winston is indeed the best QB available in this year's draft.
"As far as reading coverages and making certain throws and being asked to really carry a team, I'd put Jameis way ahead of those other guys," Winston told Tampa Bay Times.
But while Winston impressed scouts and executives during his pro day, Licht reiterated that they are not yet ready to make a decision on who to pick in the upcoming draft. The Bucs GM said that they will schedule private workouts with both Winston and Mariota in the coming weeks.
"It's just part of the process," Licht said. "We're going to use every minute of time that we have here in the next few weeks to make a decision."
The 2015 NFL Draft will take place on April 30 to May 2 in Chicago, Illinois.
