The last episode of "House of Cards" season three, President Frank Underwood was campaigning in Iowa, Doug was stalking Rachel in New Mexico -- later killing her -- and Claire was dwelling on her unhappiness in Washington. In the finale, Frank and his wife Claire squared off in the White House Oval Office. Claire had come to realize her marriage was a sham. Frank validated that her fears about him were right on. She announced that she won't be going on to New Hampshire with him. She's leaving him, she said.

A cliffhanger, for sure.

The "House of Cards" Twitter account announced Thursday the show will run a fourth season. The Twitter post included a "Season 4 coming 2016" picture and a message from Frank Underwood: "I will leave a legacy."

The series is scheduled to enter production this summer for a 2016 premiere.

Netflix did not confirm which cast members will be returning in its Thursday announcement; however, Variety previously reported that Kevin Spacey, who plays Underwood, and Robin Wright, who plays his plotting wife, "have signed on for another 13 episodes of the show, according to sources familiar with the production."

What can fans expect in "House of Cards" Season 4? It seems Frank cannot fathom being on his own, so it is likely he will work hard to keep Claire by his side. After killing Rachel, Doug returns to Frank and their fates are linked more now than ever.

Netflix does not release its streaming stats, but we know the "House of Cards" series has been one of its most popular programs. The series received three Emmys for its first season in 2013. In 2014, Wright won a Golden Globe for best actress in a TV drama. Spacey took home Golden Globe for best TV drama actor and Screen Actors Guild Awards for his performance this year.
