April Movie Preview 2015: 'Furious 7,' 'Ex Machina' and 'Manos Sucias' Among Films Showcasing Latinos
The month of April will once again showcase the best in Latino actors, directors and culture.
On April 3 Michelle Rodriguez will return to "Furious 7" and join Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, The Rock and Jason Statham in what is one of the most anticipated films of the year. The movie is expected to break records, and audiences are dying to see Walker's last film. Universal hopes the film opens with $100 million and becomes the highest opening for an April release.
The following week Guatemalan actor Oscar Isaac returns to the Science Fiction genre in "Ex Machina," a movie that already stirred great reviews out of the SXSW festival. The movie stars Alicia Vikander in the lead role, and it is Alex Garland's debut feature. Isaac's reteams with A24, who released the award winning drama "A Most Violent Year."
Eva Mendes will also star in "Lost River," the first movie by Ryan Gosling. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival where it scored mixed reviews and Warner Bros. picked it up. The film will interestingly be available on VOD and theaters at the same time, which is a first for the studio.
The same weekend will also see the release of the Tribeca Film Festival selection "Manos Sucias." The Colombian picture was a festival success, and it is likely to represent the country this upcoming year at the Academy Awards. Spike Lee was the executive producer, and it will likely generate buzz among Indie crowds.
The renowned Brazilian actress Alice Braga will also showcase her film "Kill me Three Times." Starring Simon Pegg, the movie will be released by Magnolia on VOD and in theaters.
On April 17, Raini Rodriguez and Eduardo Verastegui star in "Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2." Also starring Kevin James, the movie is a sequel to the highly successful 2009 film, which was a breakout during the January season. The new film promises to have more laughs and a lot more action sequences.
On April 24, the final weekend of the month will see "Little Boy" directed by Alejandro Monteverde and produced by Verastegui. While it does not star any Latino talent, the movie is said to be the most expensive film ever produced in Mexico. The drama stars Kevin James, Emily Watson and Tom Wilkinson. Open Road will release the movie.
The same day Radius-TWC will release "Adult Beginners" with Bobby Cannavale. The movie was a huge success at the festival circuit and has scored rave reviews. Cannavale will also have "Danny Collins" which will continue to expand after a successful limited run.
Other films opening in April include Russell Crowes' award-winning film "The Water Diviner," Lionsgate's "Child 44" with Tom Hardy and Gary Oldman, and "The Longest Ride." IFC Films will finally release "Clouds of Sils Maria," and Universal will release "Unfriended."
Fox Searchlight will unveil the Sundance hit "True Story" starring James Franco and Jonah Hill. Disney will continue its environment films with "Monkey Kingdom."
"Cinderella," "Insurgent" and "Home" will also continue at the box office continuing to garner buzz.
