Android 5.0 Lollipop Update Release Date US for LG G3 on T-Mobile: OTA Rollout Begins April 7, Download Now With LG Mobile Support
For those who bought an LG G3 through T-Mobile, your time has finally come for an official T-Mobile OTA (over the air) update to Google's latest major operating system upgrade, Android Lollipop -- specifically, Android L 5.0.1.
The uncarrier, according to TmoNews, confirmed through Twitter this week that the OTA rollout for the LG G3 is due to begin on April 7.
While the T-Mobile software support page for the LG G3 still officially marks the 2014 LG flagship as "testing" for Android 5.0 Lollipop, the Product Manager for T-Mobile Des Smith @askdes announced on Twitter "#LGG3 software update available on 4/7 for download..."
Starting on Tuesday April 7, the Android 5.0 Lollipop OTA rollout will begin for the LG G3 -- and Smith tweeted the announcement on April 2, so you know it's not a prank.
But his tweet is not the whole story, either.
That's because, as an enterprising TmoNews reader figured out, the Android 5.0.1 Lollipop update (build number LRX21Y, software version D85120b) can be downloaded by eager LG G3 owners who don't want to wait for the OTA rollout directly through the LG Mobile Support app.
If you don't have it, check out LG's official Mobile Support page, click "Software Update" at the bottom, and follow the prompts to your specific T-Mobile LG G3 (model number D851) for details on how to download the mobile support app.
The app is only available for Windows Vista PCs or higher, and we weren't able to find the LG G3 Lollipop update on the LG support site that matched the screenshot sent in by the TmoNews' readers, so perhaps the Lollipop update is only available through the LG application at the moment.
In any case, through the app or OTA, T-Mobile LG G3 owners will soon have their Lollipop.
The Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update over 1GB, so make sure you take the usual precautions before starting the upgrade process: back up your data, make sure the LG G3 is at least well over half-charged (plugged into a charger is preferable), and be connected to a fast WiFi connection.
Your device should be up to date -- running Android 4.4.2 KitKat (software version D85110r) -- before upgrading to Lollipop. And remember, these OTA rollouts take place in stages, so if you're still waiting come April 7, have a little patience and remember that many top 2014 devices on other U.S. carriers are still waiting for their Lollipop.
