iPhone 5 Sales: Apple's Newest Smartphone Sells 5 Million, on Track to Outsell Samsung's Galaxy S 3s
It has been only three days since Apple released its iPhone 5.
Apple today announced it has sold over five million of its new iPhone 5.
"Demand for iPhone 5 has been incredible and we are working hard to get an iPhone 5 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible," Tim Cook, Apple's CEO, said. "While we have sold out of our initial supply, stores continue to receive iPhone 5 shipments regularly and customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date. We appreciate everyone's patience and are working hard to build enough iPhone 5s for everyone."
The company also announced that more than 100 million iOS devices have been updated with iOS 6, the mobile operating system.
Just under a year ago when the company released iPhone 4S, it sold four million of the devices in the same period. The 4s held the record for the most weekend sales ever for a phone and more than doubled the iPhone 4 launch during its first three days.
The iPhone 5 is on track to outsell Samsung's Galaxy S 3s sold more than 20 million in 100 days.
iPhone 5 is available in the U.S., Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and the UK, and will be available in 22 more countries on Sept. 28 and more than 100 countries by the end of the year. Demand for iPhone 5 exceeded the initial supply and while the majority of pre-orders have been shipped to customers, many are scheduled to be shipped in October.
The iPhone 5 features a 4-inch display and aluminum and glass body. It is the thinnest and lightest phone that Apple has ever made at 7.6 mm thin - 18 percent thinner and 20 percent lighter than the 4S. The iPhone 5 has a resolution of 1,136 x 640 or 326 pixels per inch. The larger screen has a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio and has lengthened the phone overall. It allows for a total of six rows of apps on the screen - five rows on the "pages" along with the permanent single row along the bottom.
iPhone 5 comes in either white and silver or black and slate, and is available from the Apple Online Store (www.apple.com), Apple's retail stores, and through AT&T, Sprint, Verizon Wireless, select Best Buy, RadioShack, Target and Walmart stores and select Apple Authorized Resellers.
