Boxing News 2015: Adrien Broner Wants to Face Danny Garcia in Next Fight
Former world champion Adrien Broner challenged Danny Garcia to a fight in September after the latter successfully protected his unblemished record.
Garcia, who holds an unscathed 30-0 record with 17 knockout victories, scored a close and controversial majority decision win against Lamont Peterson in a Premier Boxing Champions event on Saturday at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Broner, who was at ringside during the fight, took to Instagram to issue a challenge for Garcia. The 25-year-old said he is glad no fighter was seriously hurt during the fight. He also added that he is good friends with both fighters, but he expressed interest in facing Garcia in a non-title fight in September in Las Vegas.
"I'm happy nobody got severely hurt I got love for both fighters but Lamont is closer to me so I was going for him," Broner wrote on Instagram. "Now I got all that out the way this is my message to my friend my homie Danny Garcia heal up well and get back in the gym and fight me in September in Vegas."
Broner, who holds a 30-1 record with 22 knockout victories, is coming off a unanimous decision win against John Molina last month. He also dominated Carlos Molina and Emmanuel Taylor in May and September last year.
Broner, the former World Boxing Association welterweight champion, is also being linked to a showdown with British boxer Amir Khan, who is also under the supervision of influential adviser Al Haymon. Haymon could easily arrange the showdown, but Khan recently said that Broner looks uninterested in a possible showdown.
Khan said that he has already reached out to Broner about a fight on May 30, but "The Problem" reportedly wants a catch weight before agreeing to a showdown. Broner wants the fight at 140-144 pounds, but Khan insisted that he is not willing to go down again to a lower weight class after fighting at the welterweight division in his last two bouts.
"We said that a fight between us could be made so why not get it made," Khan said of the fight against Broner. "He said he was up for it, but then what made me realize that maybe he's not is when he said 'I can't do the fight at 147, let's do it at 144 or 145.' I thought that's strange, because he's calling me out."
