Pebble Smartwatch vs Galaxy Gear: Do Not Disturb Feature, Display, Battery Life
Pebble and Galaxy Gear are both smartwatches, but that's where the similarities end. The Pebble has been around longer than the Gear and it's also much smaller in size. Also, the Pebble features an e-paper screen similar to the energy efficient electronic ink display on the Amazon Kindle. You can view Pebble in any environment. The Galaxy Gear, however, rocks an Organic LED display. The OLED display is amazingly crisp and offers superb color reproduction, but its Achilles heel is a terrible glare issue when held in direct sunlight.
The battery life difference is also worth mentioning. The Pebble can last a full week, but the Gear needs to be given the smartphone treatment and plugged in every night. Both watches are bleeding edge, but wouldn't it be nice to actually use a watch as a watch and wear it without worry? The Gear randomly includes a half decent 2MP camera as well. The most important differentiator however is the fact that Pebble can work with any iPhone or Android headset, whereas the Galaxy Gear is tied to a select few Samsung phones like the Note 2 and 3.
Both of these watches have been selling for quite some time now and it was just announced that a new Do Not Disturb feature has been added to Pebble via a firmware update. This is welcome news for users who were tired of getting incessant notification updates pushed from their phone to the watch. You can also keep the watch on at night now and only be alerted when you have a call. This eliminates the annoyance of being woken up when a new notification pops up on the watch and alerts you of the latest cat video to go viral on YouTube.
What new features can Galaxy Gear owners be made aware of? Well, a new software update launched in late November. Also, users of the Galaxy S III LTE version can breath a sigh of relief as they too can get a Gear to help manage their hectic digital lives.
