While the Xbox One jumped ahead in worldwide sales early on thanks to its opening day success in about a dozen countries, the PS4 has overtaken the global sales edge. Xbox One, however, has now claimed the advantage in domestic American sales.

Time said Microsoft sent the publication an email announcing the information.

According to Time, Sony has claimed to have sold 100,000 more units than its Microsoft counterpart in the most recent update.

Sony is a much more popular option in the global market, which could have had something to do with the fact that Sony didn't feel as pressured to push the worldwide release like Microsoft did, with launches in several countries upon release. Xbox has gained the edge in popularity in the United States as of late while the PlayStation has seen the most success in the worldwide market.

Microsoft claims that the NPD information indicate that the Xbox One is "significantly outpacing the nearest competitor" in sales.

The Xbox One was off to a slower start, which is why Microsoft is not focusing as much on total sales but rather the pace of sales. The PlayStation 4 game console was released on Nov. 15 while the Xbox One was released exactly a week later on Nov. 22. Both of the releases dates were perfectly aligned with the imminent Black Friday rush that came just days later.

Both Microsoft and Sony claimed to have sold more than 1 million units within the first 24 hours on sale, even though the Xbox One was available in more countries. Shortly after, both Microsoft and Sony claimed to have reached the mark of 2 million units sold.

Both companies will continue to go head to head with hopes of becoming the top game console in both the United States and the entire world.
