"Blue Bloods" will be taking this week off, but it will return on April 24, with the first of two all-new episodes that lead up to this season's (and maybe the series') finale.

Breaking from their traditional "standalone" formula for episodes that have stories which are all-encompassing to themselves, this episode, titled "New Rules," will be the first of a two-part season finale.

As reported on International Business Times, Donald Kent (guest star Dennis Haysbert), an NYPD Deputy Chief and a close friend of Commissioner Frank Reagan, has been gunned down along with his wife in broad daylight. Reagan orders all hands on deck and the teams of NYPD's finest assemble to find quick justice and a peaceful resolution for one of their own.

It seems as though Kent may have been targeted by a notorious gang, considering he was the commanding officer of the gang division. A bold and daring concept that Detectives Maria Baez and Danny Reagan first look into during their search for the killer. But not all may be what it seems.

They pay a visit to Mario Hunt, played by guest star Cliff Smith (Method Man), who is considered their primary suspect due to his infamous status with the deadly gang.

Although it is not unheard of for TV shows like this to break from their known standalone formula, it is fairly common for the season finales to feature stories that have seamless continuity.

As reported by CarterMatt, Season 6 of "Blue Bloods" has not been confirmed yet, so it may well be the last season for this popular show. This could also be a case of putting the cart before the horse though, since shows do not always get confirmed for a new season until the current season ends.

Be sure to tune into CBS on April 24 at 10 p.m. ET for the first part of this season's finale which will lead up to the end on May 1.
