Former Marine Charged With Fatally Shooting Wife at Doctor's Office in Alabama
A 25-year-old ex-Marine was arrested after he allegedly shot and killed his wife inside of a doctor's office in Alabama following a domestic dispute on Monday.
Officials say that the victim, 24-year-old Leaj Jarvis Price, ran into a doctor's office near her home in Jemison pleading for the staff to call 911 on Monday morning. Shortly thereafter, her husband, Eric Heath Price, walked into the office and fatally shot her.
Police Chief Shane Fulmer said that Leaj fled to Dr. Jayprakash Patel's internal medicine office because it was the closest place to her home.
"The first thing she said when she came in was, 'Call the police,'" Fulmer said during a press conference, reports The Associated Press. At the time, about six to seven employees, including the doctor were in the office.
After shooting her in the head, Fulmer said Eric ran back to his home and barricaded himself from police for hours during a lengthy standoff.
Price didn't surrender until police fired tear gas into the home. That's when he came outside with a gunshot wound to the head, which appeared to be self-inflicted, Fulmer said.
Fortunately, the couple's 6-year-old son was at school during the time of the shooting.
Fulmer added that Price suffered from non-life-threatening injuries to his head and is currently in serious condition at a hospital. Once he is released, he will be transported to the Chilton County Jail.
Jose Arreola, an eyewitness who owns the Chico's Tire Shop across the street from Dr. Patel's office, described what he saw to Fox 6 WBRC, saying: "I was sitting outside the shop when I saw a girl running. She went to the doctor's office trying to get help. But the guy behind her was carrying a gun. They tried to take the girl from him, but he took the gun out and shot the girl. ... The guy ran to a house, the house is not far from the doctor's, probably like 100 feet from the doctor's office," Arreola said.
