'Star Wars Rogue One News Update: New Trailer & Plot Revealed, Will Emperor Palpatine Return?
The "Star Wars" spin-off films are among the most hotly-anticipated films currently in production and none is more anticipated than Gareth Edwards' "Rogue One."
For a while, there was little known about the project, but now fans have an idea of where the director of "Monsters" and the most recent "Godzilla" film plans to take the Galaxy far, far away.
During a panel, the director revealed information about the film's plot. And for those wondering, it will take place between Episodes III and IV and features a group of rebels trying to steal the plans for the Death Star. It will be interesting to see if the emperor returns, especially since the story takes place during his reign.
Anyone familiar with the franchise knows how that story will likely end up (unless of course they succeed and another set of plans for the construction of the Death Star is concocted), but what they probably did not expect was that this film will likely not feature one of the fixture of other films in the franchise -- a climactic lightsaber battle.
Why? Because according to Edwards, this film will be rooted in a more realistic vein.
"It comes down to a group who don't have magical powers, who somehow have to bring hope to the galaxy," said Edwards, according to IGN.
The trailer showcased features some memorable lines from Obi-Wan Kenobi in Episode IV, as well as shots of the Death Star lurking in the distance. Aside from that, there is little else unveiled about the project.
Felicity Jones will headline the movie with Neil Lamont and Doug Chiang working as production designers. Greig Fraser will be the director of photography, and Neil Corbould will be in charge of visual effects.
"Rogue One" is slated for release in 2016, one year after the hotly anticipated "Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens" hits theaters. Another "Star Wars" spin-off will be directed by Josh Trank.
