One thing that is pretty daring about this season’s “Elementary” has been how the show deals with Holmes’ (Jonny Lee Miller) ever dormant drug problems.

All the drama geared towards making the detective employ his talents in a more socially sanctioned manner will mean nothing if Holmes ever gives into his demons and goes back to his old addict ways.

In the season finale, titled "A Controlled Descent," Holmes’ longtime sponsor Alfredo ends up missing, which either means that something has happened to him or that he has fallen off the wagon.

Either fate is obviously frustrating for the cocky genius.

As reported in Spoilers Guide, While Holmes and Watson (Lucy Liu) set out to find Alfredo, Holmes is brought into a different missing persons case which will place him before a lot of triggers and temptations for a recovering drug addict to deal with.

But that’s in a few weeks.

Thursday's episode of “Elementary,” entitled “Under My Skin,” is less about moral dilemmas and more about straight out murder.

When two New York City paramedics are killed during a kidnapping, Holmes and Watson join the manhunt to find the murderer as well as the woman that he has abducted.

In the episode, Holmes comes to learn some important information about his recovery sponsor Alfredo (Ato Essandoh) that will strain their relationship and no doubt come into play in the upcoming finale.

In 2013, Essandoh was interviewed by Collider about his tendency to do dark material, and how he keeps himself in the right mindset for each role.

“Sometimes I just need to separate a little bit because I know a moment has to be in a certain way and I can’t go into it with a jovial mood,” said the 42-year old actor who really burst onto the scene with his role in “Django Unchained.”

Episode 21 of the third season of “Elementary” airs Thursday night on CBS; the finale airs on May 14.
