Boxing News 2015: Oscar De La Hoya Wants Danny Garcia, Manny Pacquiao for Lucas Matthysse
Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya is lobbying for big fights for Lucas Matthysse and the Hall of Famer believes the Argentine deserves a shot against Danny Garcia and Manny Pacquiao.
Matthysse scored a hard-earned majority decision win against Ruslan Provodnikov in their 12-round showdown on Saturday night, improving his record to 37-3-0 record with 34 of those victories coming by way of knockout.
The Matthysse-Provodnikov fight was a treat to the fans with most of them calling for a rematch between the two boxing warriors. While De La Hoya had nothing but praises for Provodnikov, the boxing legend said that they are not interested in a rematch at this point and will explore other options for Matthysse.
"We're going to move on and explore other options," De La Hoya told BoxingScene. "I think what Lucas Matthysse did with his jab was amazing. Provodnikov is a great fighter. I wish him all the best. Whoever he fights he's going to beat. Provodnikov is the toughest fighter anyone could face."
According to De La Hoya, the possible rematch with Danny Garcia is currently on top of their list because the 32-year-old wants to avenge his loss to the Philadelphia native.
Garcia, the reigning World Boxing Council and World Boxing Association light welterweight champion, scored a close unanimous decision win against Matthysse during the world title fight in September 2013. De La Hoya said that boxing fans should continue calling for the rematch in order to convince Garcia to face Matthysse again.
"We want the big names, Lucas wants to stalk Danny Garcia and get the rematch," De La Hoya said. "The fans have to ask for it and keep on asking for it. That's the way you pressure fighters into taking fights."
Garcia, who holds a perfect 30-0 record with 17 knockouts, escaped with a controversial majority decision win against Lamont Peterson earlier this month -- a result that was questioned by most boxing analysts.
Aside from Garcia, De La Hoya also expressed interest in pitting Matthysse against Manny Pacquiao or big-name fighters like the Filipino boxing icon. The GBP president is convinced Matthysse has the tools to go toe-to-toe against the best fighters in the welterweight division.
"I believe Lucas Matthysse should be fighting the likes of Manny Pacquiao," De La Hoya said. "He has no problem making 147. Lucas Matthysse has the talent and power and excitement to go up against nobody."
