42nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards Winners List: 'Un Nuevo Dia' 'El Gordo y la Flaca' Win; Watch Ellen DeGeneres' Prank on Matt Lauer
Sunday night's 42nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards ended with the "Outstanding Drama Series" top prize tied between "Days of Our Lives" and "The Young and the Restless," reports The Associated Press.
In addition to the "Outstanding Drama Series" award, "The Young and the Restless" took home two more trophies on Sunday night, along with "General Hospital" who claimed three trophies.
The top prize winners were nearly upstaged by "Today Show" host Matt Lauer and Ellen DeGeneres who opened the ceremony with a gender-bending comedy skit involving pasties and black stockings.
The pretaped segment showed Lauer and DeGeneres agreeing to end their pretend feud. The best part: DeGeneres had edited the tape without Lauer's knowledge and placed his head on top of a man's ripped body dressed only in tasseled pasties, briefs and lace-topped stockings.
It brought to mind a previous prank on her talk show where DeGeneres edited Lauer in a "Fifty Shades of Grey" cast interview to show him in a similar outfit, complete with whip.
The 42nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards prank was for a good cause. A thousand dollars were donated to an unspecified charity each time Lauer's facsimile was thanked by ceremony winners. There was no final tally at the end of the night, The Washington Post reports Lauer owes about $20,000, especially if he counts the winners and presenters who mentioned him multiple times.
Earlier in the ceremony, "Jeopardy!" was named "Outstanding Game Show." Craig Ferguson accepted the "Outstanding Game Show Host" award for his work on "Celebrity Name Game."
"Steve Harvey" claimed the "Outstanding Talk Show-Informative" award while "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" earned the "Outstanding Talk Show-Entertainment" prize.
Betty White, 93, was recognized with a Daytime Emmy Awards lifetime achievement award.
There was a tribute to the late comedian and TV personality, Joan Rivers. Her daughter, Melissa Rivers, made an appearance as part of the tribute.
