Boston Marathon Bomber Trial Update: Defense Says Tamerlan Wanted to Die as a Martyr in Death Penalty Case
Defense lawyers in the Boston Marathon bombing trial continued to make their case to convince the jury why their client, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, should not be sentenced to death.
Earlier this month, the 21-year-old convicted terrorist was found guilty of 30 charges for his role in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings, including conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction and bombing a public place. The charges also covered a carjacking that took place in the aftermath of the attack, the deadly shooting of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer, and a gunfight in Watertown, Massachusetts, in which Tsarnaev and his now-deceased brother tossed explosives at police.
According to the defense team, Tsarnaev participated in the attack that killed three people and injured more than 260 others on April 15, 2013, because he was being influenced by his brother, Tamerlan. As a result, they argue that Tsarneav should face life in prison not execution.
On Wednesday, Tsarnaev's lawyers argued that he was a normal teenager who wanted to live, whereas Tamerlan was a radical Islamist was desired to become a martyr.
A paramedic named Michael Sullivan testified that Tamerlan refused medical treatment in an ambulance after he had been shot during a shootout with police three days after the attack.
"Whenever we were hands on, he got combative," Sullivan testified, adding that medics in the ambulance were unable to treat him, reports Reuters.
Meanwhile, Laura Lee, a paramedic who treated the defendant after his arrest, said that he was compliant as she treated him in an ambulance.
On Tuesday, the defense showed jurors a photo of Tamerlan with a full beard and wearing traditional white Muslim robes, while holding a pistol in front of what appeared to be the flag of jihad, reports CNN.
In another picture, he appears to be brandishing a gun near a small child.
